REMEMBRANCE/VETERANS DAY CELEBRATED AT THE SHORES OF MAUI – NOV. 11/15

Another year of remembering those who fought for our freedom.  We had over 60 residents, visitors and guests attend this November 11th, which is our largest attendance so far.

It just keeps growing.  90 year old Canadian veteran – Jack Runicles (pictured here) read a poem, and lead us in singing “We Will Meet Again” which was made famous by singer Vera Lynn and is one of the most famous songs of the Second World War era.

Other highlights – instead of reading In Flanders Fields, Joyce read a new poem – Because They Fought written by 17 year old Shea Carmichael of Qualicum which poem won several awards, and for which Shea was recognized.  Read the story http://www.pqbnews.com/news/338359132.html

Many thanks to Cheryl Smith, also pictured here for her dedication to this event, and her commitment to creating the opportunity and encouragement for us to remember.

The video is of Neil playing the bagpipes, another annual tradition at The Shores of Maui, and of course the 30 minute service ends with Eric Bogle’s The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, which he wrote to remember the 50,000+ Australians killed at Gallipoli in WW1.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG48Ftsr3OI

Lest we forget – we want to always remember.
